HOLYOKE, Mass. — City officials and the Holyoke Water Department are responding to a significant water main break on Westfield Road near Homestead Avenue following an accidental strike during utility construction. The incident occurred on Thursday, Aug. 20, when a 30-inch transmission main, the city’s primary water artery, suffered two small punctures during the installation of a telephone pole by a subcontractor for Holyoke Gas and Electric utilities.
During the press conference held on Monday, August 24th at the Mayor’s Office, there were announced some anticipated impacts and disruption.
Water Quality: Residents across large portions of the city should expect water discoloration as flow directions are rerouted.
Pressure Drops: Higher elevation areas, particularly near Ashley Road and Sunset Road, are expected to experience drops in water pressure.
Service Continuity: Officials do not anticipate full water shutoffs or impacts to local schools opening. Redundant main lines remain active to maintain citywide service and adequate fire protection pressure.
City Guidelines and Emergency Measures.
Water Restrictions: The city is upgrading current Level 2 drought restrictions to a mandatory ban on non-essential water usage. Outdoor lawn watering, vehicle washing, exterior surface cleaning, and filling swimming pools are strictly prohibited. Water use should be limited to cooking, bathing, and sanitization.
Quality Monitoring: The Water Department is conducting bacteria sampling in compliance with MassDEP and actively flushing hydrants to clear sediment. Reporting Discoloration: Residents noticing altered water quality are urged to contact the Water Department main dispatch line at 413-536-0262 to help crews pinpoint and flush affected areas.
Repair Timeline: A technical representative for the main’s Texas-based manufacturer is scheduled to arrive Tuesday to assist with a temporary patch using specialized repair components. Crews anticipate bringing the 30-inch line back online between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Additional hydrant flushing and brief flow shifts will follow once the repair is completed.
To prevent future incidents, city officials are considering new encroachment permit requirements for construction conducted near major transmission lines.
