This Week in Government Affairs Feb. 13, 2023: $1 Million From Cannabis Industry For Public Works Improvements

The Finance Committee transferred almost $1m from the city’s Cannabis Stabilization Fund to several public works projects throughout the lower wards.

Specifically, the line items on the agenda regarding the cannabis funds is as follows:

Item 7: transfer $399,00o to the city Department of Public Works for improvements on Race streets (sidewalks and road);

Item 8: transfer 202,000.00 to the DPW to improve Main Street for public safety

Item 13: transfer $150,000 to the Office of Planning and Economic Development;

Item 14: transfer $100,000 to the Office of Planning and Economic Development for public art to benefit the community;

Item 1: transfer $70,000 to the Office of Planning and Economic Development for legal services;

Aaron Vegas director of the Office of Planning and Economic Development said the funds are to improve sidewalks and roads and “draw in more people, more businesses” to the designated areas.

Cannabis operators pay the city 3 percent taxes on its sales.
