Thanks to $22M in grants from the US Department of Transportation, Wakefield, Westfield and Holyoke each received funds to replace leaky gas pipes. The Biden Administration has been working with communities nationwide to replace old pipes that leak methane into the atmosphere. A budget item of $196 million was put into grants for 37 projects spread across 19 states.

On hand to make the announcement at the Westfield Gas + Electric headquarters, was US Congressman Richard Neal, a key mover and shaker to get the money to our region. The Congressman also is the chairman of Congress’s bank, the House Ways & Means Committee.

Holyoke Mayor Joshua García also gave kudos to Jim Lavelle, the general manager of Holyoke Gas + Electric, who applied for funding to keep the city’s gas pipes clean as a whistle.
