This is the recording of the Celebration of Kwanzaa at the Community Room of Holyoke City Hall.
Sponsored by the Bethlehem Baptist Community Church, this Kwanzaa celebration represents the Seven Principles:
  • Umoja, or Unity.
  • Kujichagulia, or self-determination.
  • Ujima, or collective work and responsibility.
  • Ujamaa, or cooperative economics.
  • Nia, or purpose.
  • Kumbaa, or creativity.
  • Imani, or faith.
Celebrated from December 26, to January 1st, on each day of Kwanzaa, families light one of the black, red, or green candles in the Kinara, to represent one of the principles.
This celebration in Holyoke was hosted by Theresa Cooper-Gordon, and had the participation of Pastor Bernard Smith from the Bethlehem Baptist Community Church; Willie Spradley, Jr; guest speaker Eshu Bumpus, and Holyoke Mayor, Joshua García who gave citations to two honorees, sister Jeanette Kennedy, and brother Joe Long, Sr.
