DESCRIPTION:The Search Committee tasked with evaluating candidates for the position of police chief and then forwarding their recommendations to the Mayor will hold a public listening session at Holyoke Media on Tuesday\, August 27\, from 5 to 7 p.m. \nPolice Chief David Pratt announced his retirement on May 3. After 31 years of service\, Chief Pratt will step down July 31. Holyoke Police Captain Isaias Cruz will serve as interim chief until a permanent chief is named. \nThe Search Committee recently engaged the services of Public Safety Consultants LLC to assist the team. Public Safety Consultants provides a range of specialized services\, including personnel management\, to municipal fire and police departments in Massachusetts. One of the firm’s principals\, Russ Stevens\, will participate in the listening session. He has 37 years of municipal and state law enforcement experience\, retiring as Chief of Staff to the Connecticut State Police Colonel. Stevens holds a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor’s in Communication. He is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy and is currently the President of the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission. \nAppointed to the Search Committee by Holyoke Mayor Joshua A. If he fails to stop rampant thefts\, he will be terminated by a grumpy district manager. \nThis 90-minute story of self discovery is a tribute to the forgotten department stores and malls that closed in recent years. I will be portraying 10 different characters and the conclusion to this ride will knock you out of your seats!

DESCRIPTION:Pheeroan akLaff (drums)\, Scott Robinson\, (reeds)\, Dr. Julian Thayer (bass). \nFrom the Valley JAzz Shares website: \n” \nThe trio known as aRT – akLaff\, Robinson\, Thayer – is a highly adventurous group of creative minds that has been performing new and startling music since 1988. aRThas appeared at jazz festivals\, art galleries\, and scientific conferences here and abroad\, and has produced collaborative projects with sculptor Rob Fisher and choreographer LaRue Allen. aRT’s 1991 “Flying Carpet” multimedia performance at the Knitting Factory premiered a new\, improvisational method of interactively intermixing art/performance video streams. This idea was expanded upon in 1996 for the Studio for Creative Inquiry in Pittsburgh\, where their planetarium performance “Night of the Living Cell” combined imagery of cell life with real-time video feed of the performers – in 3D! “The result\,” The Wall Street Journal reported at the time\, “could become a new form of artistic experience.” In 1997\, aRT was selected to be the closing act for the Sun Ra Festival in New York. In 2020\, aRT performed in Philadelphia for the Institute of Contemporary Art’s exhibition on Milford Graves\, with whom aRT had been working toward a collaborative music/science project. As Mr. Graves was not well enough to perform\, he graciously provided a set of his TonoRhythmology/Sonification recordings – which he created by translating his own physiological data into musical sound — along with his blessing to incorporate them into the performance. This provided a means by which he could\, in a way\, be present and part of the music… an idea that aRT hopes to expand on in future performances. Most recently\, aRT mounted a major multimedia concert event at Roulette\, “Higher Powers\,” in honor of painter Richard M. Powers’ 2021 centennial. \naRT: Pheeroan akLaff is one of the most important drummer/percussionists in creative music. Since a very young age he has been a major contributor to the artform\, working alongside giants such as Anthony Braxton\, Cecil Taylor\, Andrew Hill\, Oliver Lake\, Sam Rivers\, Henry Threadgill and many more. Pheeroan’s music is steeped in powerful ritual and imagination\, and through his organization Seed Artists he is finding new ways to present this music to the public. \nScott Robinson is an award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist who has presented his music in nearly every corner of the globe\, appearing on more than 275 recordings. He has worked with Joe Lovano\, Ron Carter\, Maria Schneider\, Chet Baker\, Henry Grimes\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Anthony Braxton and many more. Scott’s ScienSonic Laboratories imprint has released more than a dozen adventurous and far-reaching albums\, including Flow States with Milford Graves\, Roscoe Mitchell and Marshall Allen. His quartet album Tenormore was named “Best New Release” in a 2019 JazzTimes poll. \nDr. Julian Thayer is currently Distinguished Professor of Psychological Science at UC Irvine. A Fulbright Fellow and winner of the Distinguished Scientist Award\, he has produced more than 650 publications\, and is ranked among the top .1% of most-cited researchers worldwide. His research on music and psycho-acoustics has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and Psychology Today. An accomplished bassist\, Jules has recorded with Geri Allen\, Charlie Mariano\, George Garzone and others.”

While currently taking a break from leading an active band\, Bynum still plays with friends in collective ensembles like his duo with Tomas Fujiwara\, Illegal Crowns (with Fujiwara\, Benoit Delbecq\, and Mary Halvorson)\, and Geometry (with Kyoko Kitamura\, Tomeka Reid\, and Joe Morris)\, and as a sideperson in Tomas Fujiwara’s Triple Double and Shizuko\, Jim Hobbs & the Fully Celebrated Orchestra\, and Bill Lowe’s Signifyin’ Natives. \nFrom 2004-2019\, Bynum maintained an ever-evolving ensemble that morphed between his Sextet\, 7-tette\, 9-tette\, and 15-piece Plustet. Always anchored by a core trio with Mary Halvorson and Tomas Fujiwara\, the Sextet’s final version included Bill Lowe\, Jim Hobbs\, and Ken Filiano\, after an earlier iteration with Matt Bauder\, Jessica Pavone\, and Evan Patrick O’Reilly. The musicians who helped expand the group into larger ensembles include Vincent Chancey\, Jay Hoggard\, Jason Kao Hwang\, Ingrid Laubrock\, Tomeka Reid\, Stephanie Richards\, Steve Swell\, Stomu Takeishi\, Chad Taylor and Nate Wooley. Most of these recordings are on Firehouse 12 Records\, the label he co-founded with Nick Lloyd in 2006\, including the “accidental trilogy” that concluded the journey: Navigation (2013)\, Enter the PlusTet (2016)\, and The Ambiguity Manifesto (2019). \nBynum is also recognized for his “Acoustic Bicycle Tours” (East Coast 2010\, West Coast 2014)\, where he traveled to concerts solely by bike across thousands of miles. Other long-running projects included Bynum’s SpiderMonkey Strings (an improvising chamber ensemble)\, Masters of Ceremony (an interdisciplinary dance/music quartet with Rachel Bernsen\, Melanie Maar\, and Abraham Gomez-Delgado)\, Positive Catastrophe (a 10-piece Latin free-jazz band co-led with Gomez-Delgado)\, and the collective ensembles the Thirteenth Assembly (Fujiwara\, Halvorson\, and Pavone)\, the Convergence Quartet (Alexander Hawkins\, Dominic Lash\, and Harris Eisenstadt)\, and Book of Three (John Hebert and Gerald Cleaver). The Temp\, a secular oratorio for orchestra\, big band\, vocal soloists and choir\, with a libretto by Matthea Harvey\, premiered in February 2020. Previous works for orchestra have been performed by the Scottish BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Tri-Centric Orchestra. \nBynum’s two decades of work with Anthony Braxton is recognized as one of the most generative partnerships of that legendary composer’s career\, with projects ranging from duos to orchestras and everything in between. During Bynum’s stewardship of the Tri-Centric Foundation (which he served as executive director from 2010-2018)\, he produced many major Braxton projects\, including two massive Trillium operas\, two immersive Sonic Genome performances\, and multiple festivals\, box sets and albums. Bynum also worked closely with such departed masters as Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor\, with other collaborative credits including The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra\, Nels Cline\, Emily Coates\, Bill Cole\, Kris Davis\, Ensemble Musikfabrik\, Stephen Haynes\, John Hebert\, Fred Ho\, Jason Kao Hwang\, Titus Kaphar\, Ingrid Laubrock\, Living by Lanterns\, Nicole Mitchell\, Joe Morris\, Kwaku Kwaakye Obeng\, Mali Obomsawin\, William Parker\, Matana Roberts\, Eliott Sharp\, Wadada Leo Smith\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Yo La Tengo\, and Zemog El Gallo Bueno. \nBynum’s essays\, fiction\, appreciations and remembrances have been published in The New Yorker\, Point of Departure\, Sound American\, The Baffler\, JazzTimes\, and in many liner notes. As an educator\, he has taught at universities and workshops worldwide\, and became the director of the Coast Jazz Orchestra at Dartmouth College in 2017\, where he also teaches composition\, improvisation\, and music history.

DESCRIPTION:HOLYOKE — The City’s Building Department on Thursday\, May 23\, at 6 p.m. will give a presentation on the steps required to obtain a Certificate of Inspection. The presentation — a short tutorial followed by Q&A — will be held at Holyoke Media on Suffolk Street. \nThough open to the public\, the one-hour session is designed for owners\, property managers\, and landlords of all multi-unit buildings with 3 or more units. \nOver the past several months\, the Holyoke Building Department has sent out over 500 letters to property owners who do not possess a current Certificate of Inspection\, as required in the state building code. Most recently\, letters have gone out to hundreds of owners of 3-family buildings. For most of these owners\, that notification was the first they had heard of such a requirement. \nThe code stipulates that it is up to the property owner to apply for and obtain this certificate. The letter advises that there is a fine for non-compliance. The letters were sent as a courtesy to the property owners to remind them oft he requirement.
