Holyoke Media Presents: Betsy Casañas and her new murals at HCC.
Artist, muralist, activist, and educator, Betsy Casañas, has been busy for the last weeks in our region. After completing two large murals at the Holyoke Community College, with Beyond Walls, and the “Live Well Springfield Climate Justice Mural” at 470 Chestnut Street in Springfield, MA, this prolific Puerto Rican artist is creating a unique mural inside the HCC Community Center, on the hallway outside of El Centro, with a series of portraits of different renown Latin American persons of historical, cultural, and popular relevance for representation of the different cultures of America as a continent.
In this conversation on the second day of work where Betsy, along members of the HCC community and the public have worked together on this piece, took a moment to talk about the mural and her work for the past weeks in Holyoke and Springfield.
Also, in this conversation Julissa Colón, who is the director of El Centro, joins us to talk about the relevance of Betsy’s work that will amplify the work of El Centro, the Hispanic thriving learning community space, designed to meet the needs of Latinx and Spanish speaking students, where they can receive culturally responsive guidance and support essential to achieve academic success, advancement, and a sense of belonging.
