Dr. Yadillete Rivera Colón, chair of the Local Control Subcommittee, speaks on the steps that are already being taken to map out the transition of authority over the Holyoke Public Schools  from the commonwealth’s commissioner of the Department of Elementary  and Secondary Education to the City and its elected officials.

For almost 10 years, the schools have been in receivership, meaning that an governor-appointed commissioner and his personally selected receiver have had complete control over the staffing, policies, curriculum and more.

Former Commissioner Jeffrey Riley did not support the transition, triggering s strongly worded response from Mayor Joshua García, who is also the chair of the School Committee. But Riley’s resignation earlier this year led to the appointment of Russell Johnston as acting commissioner.

Commissioner Johnston is working closely with the School Committee to end receivership of the schools.
