The History of Nueva Esperanza, as told by one of its founders, Sylvia Robello.

 In History

Nueva Esperanza was founded in 1982 as a result of several issues happening in the South Holyoke neighborhood, mainly related to landlord-neglected apartment buildings.

Today, Nueva Esperanza continues its mission as a hub for community. Sylvia Robello, artist, retired teacher, and activist, shares her own perspective of the history of how Nueva Esperanza started. She was involved in the creation of this organization, and we want to share her story, as a way to honor and amplify the voice and visibility of a woman who decided to stay behind the scenes, and build community at the same time she was taking care of her own family.
